For many Brevard County Locals who have lived here most their lives, we can remember when Titusville had a 407 area code
But Titusville's Local Ozzie Osband came up with an idea 20 years ago that no one else had. "It had to be combination 'Space Cadet' and 'Phone Freak, to come up with the idea,"
In the 1990s, Brevard County was growing and Ozzie noticed one other area code was up for geographic relief.
"3-2-1, haven't I heard that number before? Of course! Countdowns! And I live in the countdown capital. Now I know what area code I want."
Ozzie launched into action. He petitioned for testimony before the Florida Public Service Commission. At a September 24, 1998 meeting in Orlando, he made his case for the new 321 area code for Brevard County
"When I presented it to the commissioners, they loved it from the start," Osband remembers.
The 321 area code officially went into effect November 1, 1999.
Gov. Jeb Bush, made the very first call to the Kennedy Space Center using the 321 area code. On the other line, KSC Deputy Director James Jennings answered as Ozzie sat by him.
He's an admitted space geek and phone phreak, serving as a volunteer at the American Space Museum in downtown, and provides viewers launch audio at Space View Park every launch
