Titusville High School principal retires amid accusations of 'hostile environment'

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

Following complaints from a parent-teacher group at Titusville High School accusing the administration, and in particular principal Annetha Jones, of creating a "negative climate and hostile environment", Jones has retired.

A copy of Jones' email, sent to the staff on Tuesday and obtained this morning by Florida Today, states: "I am writing to say farewell. After almost 31 years in education, I have decided to retire where I will now spend time travelling and enjoying the next chapters of my life. Go Terriers!"

Jones, who has been principal for two years, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Florida Today

The parent-teacher group, which called itself Success for THS, formed in April, and submitted a 145 page-long compendium of testimonials to Brevard County School District Superintendent Mark Mullins and District 1 School Board member Misty Belford as well as other district leaders. Belford confirmed Jones' retirement in an email, but provided no additional comment.

"We do not see any way to reverse the situation while keeping the current administration," the document from the parent-teacher group said.

Jones appeared to be the primary target of the complaints. She has worked in the Brevard school district since 1992. Jennifer Gonzalez, Barbara Burgess and Todd Rassman remain assistant principals at the school.

Brevard Federation of Teachers president Anthony Colucci had previously told Florida Today that teachers complained to the union that Jones treated them unfairly and harshly.

"Our teachers have had ongoing issues with Ms. Jones, both at Jackson Middle School and now the last couple years at Titusville High School," said Colucci. "We've heard more complaints from our teachers about her than any other administrator in this district."

Jones replaced Gary Preisser, who was principal of the school since 2013
